Currently the world is facing its worst humanitarian crisis since the second world war in South Sudan. South Sudan currently has a famine going on, as well as a very unstable government with corruption and the government not working together.
South Sudan is the world's newest country, established in 2014, and because of this is having issues with its new government. It separated from the North of Sudan, as they have many differences, and many tensions have caused a civil war that has led to ethnic violence and shortage of food supply which has caused the famine. Over 50 million people have been affected by the famine, mostly in the north of the country, with the shortages are expected to grow. The situation is so terrible here that 1 in 5000 die daily. Two grade 12s have been campaigning for this issue and are taking donations which they will be giving to Unicef. There are also many ways to donate online and together if we all help we can work together to end this famine that has claimed so many lives and hurt even more.

Just after the Manchester attacks, terrorist attacks occured in London on the weekend. It started around 10pm local time, when terrorists driving a rental van went on the London Bridge and ran into pedestrians, hitting six people. The terrorists then deserted the vehicle and ran out into the Borough Market and began stabbing people, in the streets and in pubs and restaurants.
Police officers found the three men responsible and shot them that evening, about 20 minutes after the initial bridge incident. It's just awful to hear about these terrorist attacks and here about innocent people being killed, especially just after another terrorist attack so close in location and time. Just last week Trump pulled out of the climate agreement in Paris saying that it didn't put America first. Many people were upset about it and in my opinion, it was rightly so. Our world is currently in a spot where we have tons of pollution occuring which we're trying to reduce and having America leave this deal could cause a lot of problems. America is one of the top two emittors of CO2 (alongside China) and needs this deal to help keep its air clean for its growing population. Another thing that Trump said is that he wants to put "Philadelphia first, not Paris" but the mayor shot back at him saying that climate change is what they need to make an industrial place more eco friendly and how it can have a great effect. So we'll see how this goes!
So on Sunday Ariana Grande held a charity concert in Manchester for the victims of the bombs that went off at her concert in Manchester last week. Many stars joined her on stage, such as Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry and others along with a high school choir. (The video for that performance was quite touching and heart warming.) The concert supposedly raised over 2 million dollars and sold out within 20 minutes of going on sale. Concert-goers on the 22nd, which was when the bombing happened, were elligible for free tickets. The concert was broadcast all over the world in more than 33 countries. In England alone, BBC had at its peak 14.5 million viewing it on TV. All in all, it seems to have been pretty successful and I think it's wonderful that Ariana Grande wanted to do this for her fans and the victims of the awful terrorist attacks.
Speaking of exams, summer is coming up afterwards which is the sweet reward after all the hard stuff. For my summer, I'm planning on visiting my friends' cabins and camping, among spending time in the city. We have a trailer which we got for the road trips we used to do when I was younger, but now we mostly use it for camping around Manitoba, so hopefully (if my dad and I can get my mom fully on board) we'll be able to camp at Grand Beach for 3 weeks, taking some breaks to go into the city and others to spend at Victoria Beach with my friends there. I'm also going to be visiting some of my friends' cabins in the Whiteshell and in Lake of the Woods, and at Lake of the Woods, we are hoping to rent out our friend's cabin for a week too. In the in-between time, I hope to be hanging out with my friends in the city.
Exams are going to be coming up soon - only 24 days of school left. This is really nerve racking since we haven't started revision in any of my classes and I have quite a few big things due coming up. We have our 2nd website due in this class, a major project in English for which I'm doing a children's book adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, a mystery story due in French, and who knows what coming up in Social Studies. French is due this Thursday, whereas I have 2 weeks for English and Tech, but I'll still be having to study for all my subjects anyways - which reminds me, there's still math where we haven't finished all our units. So June is going to be fun.
Just yesterday, there was a tragic suicide bombing at the Ariana Grande concert which was being held in Manchester, UK. 22 died and 50+ were injured. The Islamic states of Syria and Iraq have claimed responsibility for the attack. Already 3 victims have been identified, one teenage girl, a man in his 20s, and a young girl aged 8. It's just horrible to know that these things go on in the world and how we really need to unite and work towards ending such terrorist attacks.
Many celebrities sent out their condolences via Twitter to Grande as well as the victims. Regarding my last post on Thailand: I was reading through the newsletter and noticed that there is an annual trip to Europe! I was not aware of this but apparently it's a yearly trip. I'm not sure who's all allowed to go on the Europe trip, but if I could go (and with a friend, obviously since I wouldn't want to be alone) that might win me over instead of going on the Thailand trip. It depends though where they are going. Also, I've been planning for awhile that I would travel to Europe while in university, but then again I also have to think where I'm going to get all this money from. This will be a bit of a thought process.
Yesterday we had a meeting regarding the Thailand trip that Kelvin will be going on March Break 2019. I went to this meeting along with some of my friends and we were all really interested in it! It will be an 11-day trip leaving on the Wednesday or Thursday before spring break and during the trip we would visit places such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai and other smaller locations from those two cities! One of the places that if I get to go I would be really excited for is the elephant sanctuary! It's currently scheduled as an all-day event which sounds like so much fun :) Anyways, I really hope I can convince my parents to let me go since this trip sounds like it would be a blast!
If I could only watch any TV show for the rest of my life, I would probably choose The Office for numerous reasons. The first, being its many episodes and seasons. The Office has 9 seasons which each have about 20-26 episodes each (minus the first season, which only has six.) This is better so as not to be easily bored and to always have a variety of episodes to choose from. Secondly, because it is a comedy! Sometimes, with drama shows, it's easy to get bored of the ongoing affairs and everyone's always crying and sometimes it's just too much. With a comedy, it can always lift up a dreary mood and lighten up the atmosphere. Finally, it's one of the few shows that I haven't gotten bored with at one point or another. So that's why I would pick The Office!
